A personal Gantt chart: plans outside work
The things that are hardest to plan at home are the ones with deadlines that do not move and steps that have to happen in order: a wedding date, a moving day, an exam timetable. A Gantt chart is built for exactly that. It turns "we should book the venue soon" into a date, and it shows which job has to start this week for everything else to fit.

Create Your Gantt Chart FreeWhen a personal plan needs a Gantt chart
A list is enough when the order does not matter. A Gantt chart earns its place when it does: when the invitations cannot go out until the venue is booked, or the boxes cannot be packed until the packing materials arrive. Three signs you need one:
- There is a fixed date at the end that cannot move
- Some jobs cannot start until others are done
- Some jobs take weeks of waiting (a supplier, a form, a reply) rather than work
How to build one in ten minutes
Write every job as a row. Give each one a length in days and say what it waits for. Put the fixed date in as a milestone (a task with a duration of 0) at the end. GanttCharts.app works out every date from there, and when one job takes longer, everything that depends on it moves.
Durations are counted in working days, Monday to Friday, so a job that takes a week is 5 (or type "1w") and a job that takes a month is about 20. Waiting time, such as a two-week delivery, is a task too: it takes days even though nobody is working on it.
Leave room for things to go wrong
Every personal plan has a job that takes twice as long as hoped. Put a buffer task in front of the fixed date, so a slip eats the buffer rather than the deadline.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a Gantt chart for personal planning?
Yes. Any plan with a fixed end date and steps that must happen in order, such as a wedding, a move or exam revision, is easier to plan as a Gantt chart than as a list.
Do personal plans use working days?
GanttCharts.app counts durations in working days, Monday to Friday, and skips weekends. Size a job in weeks and multiply by five: a two-week job is 10.
