Frequently asked questions

Everything about the free Gantt chart maker, and where GanttCharts.app ends and QueryChart begins.

About GanttCharts.app

What is GanttCharts.app?

GanttCharts.app is a free, no-signup Gantt chart maker. You type your tasks one per row, with how long each takes and what it waits for, and the Gantt chart schedules itself: dates, dependencies, milestones and the critical path are worked out for you.

Is GanttCharts.app free?

Yes. Building Gantt charts is free with no time limit and no account required. Your work is saved automatically in your browser. Downloading needs a free QueryChart account.

Do I need to sign up?

No. The editor opens ready to use: no account, no email, no trial clock. You only create an account to download, save to the cloud or share, which live on QueryChart.

Do I need to install anything?

No. GanttCharts.app runs in the browser on Mac, Windows, Linux and Chromebook. There is nothing to download.

Making Gantt charts

How do I make a Gantt chart here?

Each row of the sheet is a task. Type its name, its duration in working days, and the task it waits for in Depends on. The dates are worked out for you, and changing one duration moves every task after it.

How do I add a milestone?

Give a task a duration of 0. It is drawn as a diamond on the day the tasks it depends on finish.

Which dependency types are supported?

All four: finish-to-start (the default), start-to-start, finish-to-finish and start-to-finish, with a lag or lead in working days, written like "7FF+2".

Does it skip weekends?

Yes. Durations and lags count working days, Monday to Friday. A task whose start falls on a weekend starts on the next working day.

Can I paste tasks from Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. Paste a table of tasks into the sheet and the plan assembles itself. Anything it cannot read, such as a value that is not a date, is flagged on its row rather than guessed.

Can I group tasks and track progress?

Yes. The Owner column groups tasks under a heading (a person, a team, a phase or a subject), and Progress records how far along each task is, from 0 to 100%.

Are there templates?

Yes. The template rail in the editor opens QueryChart's Gantt library: projects, launches, events, research, implementations and more, each ready to edit.

GanttCharts.app and QueryChart

What's the difference between GanttCharts.app and QueryChart?

GanttCharts.app is the free maker: tasks in, schedule out, saved in your browser. QueryChart is the platform it is built on: downloads, cloud save, sharing, comments, team workspaces and version history.

What happens to my plan when I sign up?

It moves into your new QueryChart account with its tasks, dependencies and owners intact, and you keep editing it there.

Does it do resource levelling, costs or baselines?

No. GanttCharts.app is a scheduling tool for tasks, dependencies and milestones. For resource levelling, costs and baselines, full project-management software is the right choice.
