A 30-60-90 day plan as a Gantt chart

A 30-60-90 day plan is the first plan most people write in a new role: what to learn in the first month, what to contribute in the second, what to own by the end of the third. Written as a document it is easy to agree and easy to forget. As a Gantt chart, with three milestones and real dates, it becomes something you and your manager can check every week.

Three groups, three milestones

Use three groups, written in the Owner column of each task: Learn (days 1 to 30), Contribute (31 to 60) and Lead (61 to 90). End each with a milestone, a task with a duration of 0, for the check-in with your manager. Working days run Monday to Friday, so each 30-day block is about 22 working days, and the plan starts on the day you create it.

Days 1 to 30: learn

The first month is about people and context. Meet each person on the team one to one, and meet the people your team depends on. Drawing the team's org chart in your first week, with who reports to whom and the open roles, is the quickest way to know who to meet, and it is a useful thing to hand back to your manager.

  • One-to-one with every direct report (week 1–2)
  • Map the team and its neighbours (week 1)
  • Learn the current goals, numbers and open problems
  • Day 30 check-in: what you learned, what you would change

Days 31 to 60: contribute

The second month is for early wins: pick one or two problems from the first month, small enough to finish in a few weeks, and make them depend on the day-30 check-in so they start once you and your manager have agreed them.

Days 61 to 90: lead

The third month turns what you learned into a plan of your own: the team's priorities for the next quarter, a process you want to change, a hire. The day-90 milestone is the review where that plan is agreed.

Onboarding someone else?

The company side of a first 90 days, from paperwork to training and the probation review, is its own plan. QueryChart has an employee onboarding Gantt chart ready to adapt.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 30-60-90 day plan?

A plan for the first three months in a new role: learn in the first 30 days, contribute in the next 30, and lead or own an area by day 90, with a check-in at each step.

Why put a 30-60-90 day plan in a Gantt chart?

It gives every goal a date and every check-in a milestone, and shows when goals depend on each other, so the plan stays useful after the first week.
